Reading Stool

Build a wooden stool in the shop using exactly 4 boards of poplar. Each board can be cut into any shape or length, but all cuts must be at 90 degrees to one another. The stool must house one book of your choice and the designed qualities of the stool must reflect the book's theme and genre.

From this project I learned how to use the basic tools of a wood shop and gained more experience in using abstract concepts to influence design aesthetics.

Abstract concept to design aesthetic

After choosing The Great Train Robbery by Michael Crichton, I researched images of 1800's trains, lock picking, and pickpocketing. In my design I used many level and layers and subtle offsets to capture the idea of the intricacy and finesse used in lock picking. The position of the book is meant to simulate a wallet in a back pocket.
